The Best Cat Cages & Kennels (2020 Reviews)

Cats have a mind of their own and need (demand) their own space. However, sometimes roaming freely through your home isn’t the best option. Cat cages and kennels keep your cat contained while you have guests, you’re at work, or when you’re traveling with your favorite feline. Most models are multi-level with ramps, platforms, or hammocks that allow your cat to move, play, and lounge in peace.

We’ve reviewed dozens of cat cages and kennels in search of the best of the best. There’s a lot to consider like size, portability, foldability, and how easy the cage is to clean. And then there’s always the question of whether or not it will meet your cat’s high standards. While we can’t vouch for what your cat will think, we’ve found some great cages that provide space, room to move, and cleaning ease.

Best Cat Cage Overall

Prevue Pet Products Premium Cat Home

It’s got height, two extra-large hammocks, and three tiers, making the Prevue a great choice for single or multi-cat homes

The Prevue Pet Products Cat Home is available in a deluxe or premium version. Either one will provide a safe, high-quality cage for your cat. But, we’re partial to the premium version with its hammocks and felt platform covers. It also includes three doors, which gives your cat easy entry and escape and easy cleaning access for you. You need some square footage for this model, but it gives your cat(s) plenty of vertical space to call their own.

Best Cat Cage or Kennel Overall: Prevue Pet Products Premium Cat Home

The Prevue Pet Products Premium Cat Home provides plenty of space and comfort for your cat. This model actually comes in a deluxe or premium version. While both are excellent choices, the premium model stands out for the extra size and comfort features that come along with added space. The premium will work for one pampered cat or for a multi-cat home.

It includes two extra-large, locking platforms. Cats are all about comfort and both platforms come with a removable felt cover. We like to see removable covers because they’re easier to maintain and clean. And, you can replace the cover instead of the entire platform should your cat be too hard on them. Your cat will have even lounging more options with the two extra-large hammocks. They’re perfect for the feline that likes their foot or tail to dangle.

Even if you put comfort aside, the Prevue comes with some excellent convenience features for you as the owner. Three large doors give you easy access for cleaning and not to mention escape hatches for your cat. Rolling casters allow you to move it to clear space for a party or put it in a less public area when you have guests. Finally, once it’s assembled and everything is locked in place, the Pervue is sturdy. You don’t have to worry about a rambunctious kitten knocking it down or getting caught in a loose panel.

Prevue Pet Products Premium Cat Home Key Features:

  • Two (2) locking platforms, measuring 26 x 14 inches each
  • Two (2) hammocks, measuring 26 x 14 inches each
  • Three (3) double door entry points
  • Rolling casters
  • Rust-resistant metal
  • Dimensions: 43.25 x 25.25 x 44.875 inches

Best Multi-Level Cat Cage or Kennel: Midwest Cat Playpen

Best Multi-Level Cat Cage or Kennel

Midwest Cat Playpen

A fluffy chenille cat bed and rolling casters are only two of the perks that come with this model. With two perches and easy double-door access, both you and your cat with happy with this one.

The Midwest Cat Playpen provides plenty of space and lounging options for your cat. At four feet tall, this model doesn’t take up as much space as the five-foot models, but it still provides plenty of room for up to three cats. It includes two platforms and, of course, the cat bed we can’t quite get enough of.

You’ve got complete access to the interior through two sets of double doors. You can also remove the base for easy cleaning without collapsing the entire cage. And speaking of collapsing, this model folds down into the base for simple storage. It’s a great option for cat owners who may not need a cat cage all the time. While we like this model, it didn’t get our top spot for two reasons. The directions are difficult to follow and once assembled, some units leave gaps large enough for smaller cats and kittens to get their paws stuck.

Midwest Cat Playpen Key Features:

  • One (1) chenille cat bed
  • Two (2) platforms
  • Foldable design
  • Rolling casters
  • Dimensions: 36 x 23.5 x 50.5 inches

Best Budget Cat Cage or Kennel: AmazonBasics Large Cat Cage

Best Budget Cat Cage or Kennel

AmazonBasics Large Cat Cage

Leave it to Amazon to come up with a sturdy, foldable cat cage that’s big enough for two cats and sturdy enough for active play.

Amazon keeps its design simple but sturdy with the AmazonBasics Large Cat Cage. Rambunctious cats will find plenty of room in this three-tier model. The vertical space allows cats to climb with three platforms for resting or pouncing. This model skips hammocks and plush bedding for the basics you need in a solidly built cage. Build quality repeated comes up in users’ reported favorite features.

Beyond build, it also has easy to use swing doors with locking latches. Your cat won’t be able to push the doors open when you’re away, so no surprises when you get home. Mobility can also be an issue with cages. Sometimes having your cat in the living room isn’t a problem. However, there are other times, like when you have company, when you might want to keep your cat secure in another area. This model’s rolling casters let you move it as needed. When not in use, if folds down onto the bottom platform for simple storage. We also like that it comes with Amazon’s one-year warranty, something you won’t find with many other models.

AmazonBasics Large Cat Cage Key Features:

  • Foldable design
  • High-quality, sturdy build
  • Three (3) tiers and platforms
  • Rolling casters
  • Dimensions: 35.8 x 22.4 x 50.6 inches

Best Cat Travel Kennel: Parkland Pet Portable Kennel

Best Cat Travel Kennel

Parkland Pet Portable Kennel

Easy to set up and store, the Parkland Pet Portable Kennel travels with you and keeps your cat safe, secure, and contained when you’re away from home.

Portable kennels let your cat safely travel with you. The Parkland Pet Portable Kennel has the basics you need in a kennel and then some. First, it folds down flat and zips into a portable case with handles. We all know traveling with a pet adds more gear than you’d like to admit. Here’s one that won’t eat up your trunk space. Second, it pops up in seconds. There’s no assembly like with a metal cage. You do have to fold it down correctly to fit it back in the case, but even that doesn’t take long.

Our favorite feature has to be the removable top. Cats aren’t known for staying where they don’t want to be, but with this model, you can give your cat security based on their personality. Some will welcome an open-top, but for those times you need your cat to stay put, zip the top and entrance for a secure place for your cat to rest. A mesh panel in the door and on the sides ensures your pet gets plenty of ventilation. We also can’t help but like the matching feeding bowl.

This model comes in three sizes, so base your choice on your cat’s size and how you intend to use the kennel. If it’s just a sleeping area when you’re away from home, the size small will probably be big enough. However, if you need somewhere for your cat to stay while visiting a friend or relative, the bigger model might make your cat more comfortable.

Parkland Portable Kennel Key Features:

  • Quick, popup set up
  • Storage bag with carrying handles
  • Matching water/feeding bowl
  • Three (3) size options
  • Removable top
  • Ventilation panels on the sides and door
  • Dimensions: 24 x 36 x 36 inches (medium)

Best Large Cat Kennel: IRIS Wire Cat Cage

Best Large Cat Kennel

IRIS Wire Cat Cage

Big, tall, and sturdy—that’s perfect for multi-cat homes or cats who demand their fair share of square footage.

The IRIS Wire Cat Cage provides plenty of room for feline friends. This model opts for more vertical than horizontal height, making it a great option for apartments and homes with limited space. The five-foot ten-inch height includes two platforms for lounging. There’s enough space for two cats. If you have kittens you can probably fit even more, but there could be some jostling for platform space.

Cages of this height need some extra help when it comes to moving. For added stability, this model has six rather than the standard four casters. It also includes two stoppers to prevent rolling when you’re not around. Three swing doors provide access to every platform for easy cleaning. However, they can all be locked closed or open. Whether your home or not, your cat can have unlimited access to his favorite lounge space.

This model also comes in two color options—white or silver. And, if the height isn’t what you’re after, you can get the same quality in a two-tier model.

IRIS Wire Cat Cage Key Features:

  • Six (6) rolling casters
  • Two (2) stoppers
  • Two (2) platforms
  • Three (3) swinging doors that lock open or closed
  • Panels lock to the bottom platform
  • Dimensions: 24.8 x 36.61 x 70.08 inches

Who Should Buy a Cat Cage or Kennel

There are a number of reasons you may need a cat cage. Some owners (and cats) need a designated space to keep the family peace. While cats may roam freely some of the time, other times it’s just not practical. Cages can keep your cats from destroying your home while you’re at work or from pestering guests. Of course, the cage can also keep your cat safe when friendly guests get too handsy. Cat cages and kennels also give your cat some perching and lounging options you may not have anywhere else in your house.

Portable models will give you those same benefits when you’re traveling with your pet. If you’re purchasing a portable model, give your cat some time to get used to it while you’re at home. That way, once you’re on the road, he’ll automatically have a space that feels comfortable and welcoming. That familiarity can make travel more pleasurable for everyone.

It’s got height, two extra-large hammocks, and three tiers, making the Prevue a great choice for single or multi-cat homes.

Important Features to Consider

A cat cage or kennel should have a few key features, depending on how you want to use it. Here’s what to consider when making your choice:

  • Size and tiers. Cages come in a variety of sizes from single-tier models with more horizontal space to three or four-tier models that reach well over five feet. If square footage is at a premium, vertical models don’t take floor space but provide room for your cat to climb. Multi-cat homes will need a platform (and tier) for each cat. Measure your available space. Once you’ve measured, measure again to make sure you match up your available space with the cage’s dimensions.
  • Mobility. Models with rolling casters make it far easier to move the cage when needed. Most have four, but some larger models have six or seven casters. Casters that lock in place prevent rolling and accidental movement from rambunctious felines. If you’re not convinced you need mobility, just consider that there may be times when you want a cat-free entertaining space and casters will let you move the cage without disassembling it.
  • Safety. Cages and kennels should be safe for your cat. Locking sides, doors, and platforms prevent accidental falls. Watch out for models where the panels do not line up. Mismatched panels create spaces for paws and claws to get caught.
  • Foldability and storage. Measure your available space. For those who don’t want or need a cage all the time, foldable models are the easiest to manage and store. The panels typically fold down onto the bottom platform without completely disassembling the cage.
  • Portability. A portable cat cage or kennel lets you take your cat with you while you travel. You can also use them in your own yard to keep your cat contained or provide a shady area for lounging. These models have soft, fabric sides and may include a litter box and/or water bowl. They often fold down and fit into a handled carrying bag or case.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a cat kennel used for?

Cat kennels provide a confined space for your cat to lounge or sleep. You can lock the doors to keep your cat inside or leave the doors open, so your cat can come and go as he pleases. Many people use them to contain their cats while they’re away from home or while they have guests. Some models can be wheeled around, which lets you move them out of your public spaces when needed.

Can cats live in a cage?

Cats cannot live in a cage indefinitely. They need exercise and space. However, cats do like to have room to climb, perch, and lounge undisturbed. Cat cages often provide space, means, and privacy for them to exhibit these important cat behaviors. They’re also helpful if your cat gets sick and you need to administer medicine or when introducing a new cat. It can also help you litter train kittens as there aren’t as many spaces for him to have accidents.

Is it okay to cage a cat at night?

As long as your cat has access to water and a litter box, you can cage them at night. In fact, a cage can be a safe place for kittens or elderly cats who are prone to getting into trouble while you sleep.

However, for your cat to like the cage, you need to make it comfortable. A litterbox, water, food, and toy or two can make it someplace he doesn’t mind being for the night. A hammock or soft bedding can also make the cage more comfortable. Before locking him up for the night, spend some time letting him get used to the cage when he can freely move in and out. You may even use some catnip to entice him in the first time.

How do you crate train a cat?

Cats are intelligent animals, but you don’t want to force them into the cage or they may never like it. Start by making the cage comfortable. Food, water, litterbox, toys, and a cozy place to lounge are a good way to start. Let him get used to the crate on his own terms. Leave the doors open and let him explore. If he’s not interested, try leaving a treat inside the door. Next time, place a treat on an upper platform to encourage him to explore. You can also try catnip or pheromones (available from pet stores) to entice your cat through the door.

Let your cat go in and out for several days or weeks until he’s comfortable. Then, you can try closing the door and leaving him inside for an hour or two. Don’t leave the house with him in the cage until he’s successfully and calmly stayed inside with the doors locked. Prematurely locking the door may cause a panic and make it nearly impossible to get him inside again. Once he’s gotten used to it, you can try leaving him overnight or during the day when you’re gone. As long as you make the cage comfortable and inviting, your cat shouldn’t mind spending a little time alone.
