History

In The Dalles, Oregon, in 1982, a brown tabby barn cat named Speedy gave birth to a litter of kittens, one of which was bald, had skin covered in tabby markings, and had large, widely spaced ears. She had the appearance of a tiny space alien. She appeared even more dissimilar when her coat started to form because it was curly. And Linda Koehl, the owner, gave her that name.

Eventually, Curly gave birth to her own kittens by a number of local males, including a Siamese and a Manx. As a result of a dominant mutation, all of her kittens had the same curly coat as their mother. Geneticists found that the cats were unique from other rex, or curly-coated, breeds like the Devon and Cornish Rexes, which originated in Great Britain, as well as the Selkirk Rex, which first appeared in Montana in 1987.

The curly-coated cats eventually sought recognition as a breed. In 2002, The International Cat Association recognized them and gave them the name LaPerm. The breed is approved by the Cat Fanciers Association as well. LaPerms are outcrossed to domestic shorthairs and longhairs that are not pedigreed in order to preserve their genetic diversity.

Size

Small and weighing between five and eight pounds, the LaPerm is a cat. He matures between the ages of two and three.

Personality

The astute LaPerm has a humorous side. He is sometimes referred to as clownish and is a bit of a troublemaker who uses his skillful paws to open doors, swipe objects he wants, or tap you on the shoulder to get your attention.

He doesn’t cling to you, but he likes to be near you and will do whatever is most convenient for him, including follow you around, sit on your shoulder or the top of your computer, or even take a seat in your lap. He enjoys retrieving objects that are thrown for him and is moderately active.

The LaPerm is a pleasant person to live with, despite his reputation for getting into things. He is kind, gentle, and patient with his people and rarely raises his voice. As long as they were well socialized as kittens, the majority are also friendly toward guests.

Health

Pedigreed and mixed-breed cats both have varying rates of health issues that could be genetic in origin. However, La Perms are generally in good health.

Care

If the LaPerm’s unusual coat is combed or brushed one to three times per week, it is simple to maintain and typically doesn’t mat or tangle. Longer coats require more frequent grooming. The best results come from using a comb with rotating teeth. Without straightening the curls, it will easily pass through the coat. The cat’s coat should be misted with a little water or fluffed with damp hands to maintain its curly appearance.

Little shedding occurs, and regular brushing further reduces shedding. Use a slicker brush or greyhound comb (stainless steel with narrow teeth on one end and wider teeth on the other end) to gently remove any small mats that may appear. In the event that you bathe the LaPerm, press a towel against the coat to absorb moisture before allowing him to air dry in a warm, draft-free area. He’ll get the frizzies if he uses the blow dryer.

To prevent periodontal disease, brush your teeth. Although daily brushing is preferred, once a week is still preferable to never. Weekly nail trimming is done. To get rid of any discharge, use a soft, damp cloth to wipe the corners of your eyes. To prevent the spread of any infection, use a different area of the cloth for each eye.

Each week, check your ears. If they appear to be dirty, clean them with a cotton ball or soft, damp cloth dipped in a 50/50 solution of warm water and cider vinegar. Cotton swabs shouldn’t be used because they can harm the ear’s interior.Maintain a spotless litter box. Cats are extremely picky about bathroom cleanliness.

LaPerms should only be kept indoors to protect them from illnesses spread by other cats, dog or coyote attacks, and other risks that outdoor cats face, like being hit by a car. LaPerms who venture outside also run the risk of being taken by a person who wants to own such a unique cat without having to pay for it.

Coat Design and Maintenance

The most striking aspect of the LaPerm is undoubtedly his coat, which has loose, bouncy curls that make it feel light and airy to the touch. Longer, tighter curls gather at the base of the ears and form a ruff around the neck. Additionally, the whiskers are long and curly. The coat is available in any color or pattern and comes in two lengths—short and long. Red, tortoiseshell, and tabby cats are the most prevalent.

LaPerms with long hair have a plumed tail. The length and fullness of the coat may change seasonally. It occasionally naturally separates down the center of the back.Unlike the longhaired LaPerm, the shorthaired LaPerm may or may not have a ruff, ringlets, or “earmuffs,” and their coats can have a different texture. He has a tail that resembles a bottlebrush more than a plume and has fur that appears wavy. The back of the short coat can also be parted down the middle.

No matter the length, there are various manifestations of the LaPerm coat. Cats can be born with straight, curly, or hairless fur. Kittens with long hair and those with short hair can both be born in the same litter. You might have noticed that your kitten’s name contains the letters BC, BS, or BB on its pedigree. These initials help breeders learn how the gene is expressed because they reveal whether the kitten was born curly, straight, or bald.

The LaPerm’s head has a modified wedge shape and is rounded in appearance. The medium to large ears have a slight flare to them. The outer ears of longhaired LaPerms are covered in fur that resembles earmuffs and have full furnishings (hair inside the ears). Colorless eyes can still be expressive.

Kids and other animals

LaPerm is a friendly, playful dog who enjoys spending time with both dogs and cat-friendly families. He can be taught tricks, he likes interactive toys, and he appreciates the respect and consideration shown to him by young people. Children should be watched and taught proper cat petting techniques. Have them sit on the floor and pet the cat rather than carrying or holding it. Always introduce new pets slowly and in a supervised environment, even other cats.
